Instant Oatmeal For Less - WFMW

I am not sure where I picked up this recipe but it's a good one and a great money saving idea. I used to use it all the time but my kids really prefer the whole oats to the quick ones now. I still make it to keep in a pinch, though. It's sooo much better than the packaged instant oatmeal and works out to be about 25 cents a serving. It is definitely one of my greatest kitchen tips!

Instant Oatmeal

  • 1-18 oz. container of quick-cooking oats
  • 1 envelope of nonfat dry milk (3.2 oz)
  • 2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup raisins(optional)
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well. Transfer to an airtight container. For breakfast: Scoop 1/2 cup oatmeal mix into a microwavable bowl. Add 1/2 cup water. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir and let rest for 5 minutes or until cooled a bit. Makes about 16 servings.

I'll have to try this. I love the real oats compared to the insta-junk.

Have you tried the steel-cut oatmeal. My mind says its oatmeal, my mouth says otherwise. Consistency is different.

Wow...great idea. My dad eats instant every morning so this would be great for him. Thanks!

THANK YOU! I'm getting ready to head out on maternity leave and unfortunately don't have any pay coming in for the next 2-3 months. I have to go back when we run out of money :(

I was telling my husband last night that I was going to find a recipe for instant oatmeal since that's what we eat around here most days for breakfast. And save us some cash not buying boxes of packaged instant oatmeal. This is perfect! Thanks!!!
