So, I remembered that my Sister-in-law sent me this recipe a few years back from her neighbor who was of middle-eastern descent. So, I easily replaced my store-bought hummus with this. It actually saves me money, too! Bonus.
It's easy and good. Plenty of garlic to chase those colds away. I use organic canned chick peas - rinsed. I suppose you could make your own if you have the time. Tahini is hard to find - I finally found it at Whole Foods. Or any middle eastern grocery store. Sometimes, they carry it in the Asian or middle-eastern section of your regular grocery store. Or you could make your own - it's just toasted sesame seeds and olive oil crushed together much like peanut butter.
Homemade Hummus
- 1 can chick peas - rinsed
- 1 lemon
- 5-6 cloves of garlic - minced
- pinch of sea salt
- 1 T Tahini
- 1/2 tsp. olive oil (I think I add a little more of this actually, maybe more like 1 tsp.)
- 1/3 cup of water
It makes a good amount and my kids like it better!

I get Tahini at Lowes. They used to carry it when I made hummus. It is just hard to find. I used to make my own. I also would roast a red pepper and add it. Hope you are well. I still have Keith's crutches. Sorry about that but I had to have foot surgery again yesterday so they are being used. Do you want us to send you a check for them?
Thanks for the recipe Janel! I've been looking for a good hummus recipe. I can't wait to give it a try!
I love hummus and can't wait to try this recipe. I did make some last year with some curry in it - and it was good.
Thanks for sharing!
I might try this, my kids like some I buy with roasted red pepper in it, so I might need to experiment.
Sounds yummy! The only hummus I've ever made is a white bean hummus that uses cannellini beans. I've never bought tahini - is it expensive?
Darn! I have everything for in my pantry except for the tahini:( I hope my grocery store carries it!
Football Saturday may be a good day to try this recipe.
If I can find Tahini. I don't think that we have a Whole Foods in my area.
Wish me luck!
Sweet dreams.
Oh, all the add-ins sound delish! Thanks for the ideas.
Tahini is not expensive and goes a long way. Many regular grocery stores carry it.
Be sure to check out the other recipes over at Katie's blog. Some good ones for sure.
How embarrassing that it took over a week to visit your post! Hummus is one of those things I've never made from scratch before. It's good to have the encouragement that it's easy!
I really appreciate you linking up to the Un-Processed foods Carnival; it will be a valuable resource that I will direct my readers to often!
Thanks, Katie
