Pie is Not Meant to Be Slurped

I learned this week that pie is meant to be eaten slowly.  Enjoyed with a fork.  Every bite savored.

It is not meant to be slurped.  Not meant to go in your nose and you definitely should not try to consume an entire one in 90 seconds against 5 men.  Beasts, I tell you.

For some crazy reason...I'm crying peer pressure, I was strong-armed convinced to participate, in my husband's absence, in a pie eating contest.  Against 5 grown men.  Big men.  One was a football player for crying out loud.

It was all for a good cause.  At least, that's what they told me.  We had a tailgate party at church this weekend.  What were we tailgating for you might wonder?  For the heck of it.  We tailgate for every sport known to man, why not for church?  It was a great opportunity to hang out and get to know each other better.  So, that's what we did.  We hung out and then people laughed at the only woman in the pie eating contest.  It was not a good time.   I think there are even pictures to prove how embarrassing fun it was.  Maybe I can find them and destroy show them here in another lifetime

All in all, I learned another lesson - So, let it be said in right here in black and white.  That I will never.  Ever.  EVER.  Participate in a pie eating contest again.  It was in my nose, it was the longest 90 seconds of my life and I almost threw up about 3 times.   I'm not sure I will ever look at apple pie the same again.

I will say that my pie was the neatest of them all and if there were a prize for NOT making a colossal mess, I would have won, thankyouverymuch.

I'm sure they weren't laughing at you they were probably laughing with you. I don't think I could have done that- apple pie is the only kind of pie I like. You were one brave woman ;-)

Never seen a pie-eating contest, and never been to a tail-gate party - in fact I am not sure I know what they are!!!

Enlighten me please, here in N Ireland.

Thanks.

Well, you probably never want to see a pie-eating contest - it is disgusting. But basically, a group of people are timed to see who can finish a pie first in an allowed time. It's especially fun with blueberry and cherry pies. Oh, and no hands!

Tail-gating is a fun American tradition where people gather in the parking lots of stadiums while waiting for their favorite team to start playing whatever sport it is they are playing and at half-time. Some do it for concerts, too. People grill food, bring chairs, games and music. Many times they drink lots of beer before heading into the games or concerts. All of this is done at the tail of the car in the parking lot outside the gates of the game or concert (hence the name). Basically, it's a festive party in the parking lot and a good excuse for people to make game day last longer than it should and not pay too much money for expensive beer while inside the stadium (if they are even serving it inside)

For church, we passed on drinking lots of beer :) and just ate food, played games and music.

and ate pie. ;)

No pics and video?

How awesome you took on all those guys but I bet it did not feel good to have pie up your nose.

Ewwww... you are brave! I've only seen pie eating contests use cream pies. I can't imagine trying to get the fruit down. What a good sport you are! I love the tailgating at church idea... Neat!

You did a great job Janel! We were rooting for you, not laughing at you. :) I give you props for doing it at all. I'm not sure I would have been brave enough to even try it. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures, though I'm sure there are many out there.

I think your hubby owes you dinner (or maybe dessert - but not pie) for filling in for him. ;)

...for filling in for him! filling..pie filling! lol!

and yes - cream pies would have been MUCH better. I could have easily choked down a chocolate cream pie. ;)
